Job Description:
The Head Custodian is a full-time position responsible for the cleaning, maintenance and oversight of the facilities at the campus of Sacred Heart Church at 910 Main St. S, Southbury (with occasional assistance at the second facility, St. John of the Cross at 1263 West St, Middlebury, CT 06762). We seek a diligent, organized and proactive Head Custodian for our large church building. The Head Custodian will be attentive to detail and physically capable of meeting the demands of maintaining the church building, including stooping, moving tables, and performing thorough cleaning and minor maintenance tasks to ensure a safe, welcoming, and pristine environment. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Custodial duties of entire Sacred Heart Church (SHC) facility. Assist at Saint John of the Cross Church in Middlebury when necessary.
- Opens SHC in the morning (7:30am)
- Oversees building mechanical equipment, utilities, lighting, alarms, electrical, cameras (security) and grounds maintenance.
- Cleans the worship space each week after the weekend liturgies and in anticipation of the upcoming weekend liturgies.
- Clean the hallways, bathrooms, meeting rooms and kitchens as needed. Special attention should be given to having the facility clean and presentable for the weekend liturgies, funerals and other occasions when it is being used by the public.
- Duties include:
- Vacuuming
- Dusting
- Mopping
- Window washing
- Clean and stock all bathrooms
- Trash removal
- Monitor all HVAC controls and report problems.
- Sets up facilities for parish events as needed in coordination with appropriate pastoral staff people (Office Manager, Faith Formation Office).
- Collaborates with the Parish Buildings and Ground committee and Pastor to assess needed repairs or maintenance. Reports to Pastor, in consultation with Buildings and Ground Committee when outside assistance is needed.
- May attend functions that fall on weekends such as wakes, funerals and events that require someone to clean after and reset facility.
- On call for emergency situations (etc. alarms).
- Assists ground-keeping and snow removal teams, as needed.
- Organizes and puts out weekend bulletins.
- Arranges for the layout and distribution (baskets, etc.) of seasonal prayer books, calendars (e.i. Little Black Books, Blue books, calendars).
Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Three or more years of custodial and light maintenance experience
- Must have a valid driver’s license. Other maintenance certifications preferred but not required
Requires physical work: moving, lifting, frequent pulling/organizing chairs/tables, as well stooping, bending, reaching, climbing ladders.
Must be willing to be on-call on weekends for emergencies.
